Luxury Resort Review: Oubaai Hotel Golf and Spa, George, South Africa

If you are travelling along the Garden route of South Africa, this luxury resort offers a memorable stay, various activities and close to 240 hectares of beautiful surroundings.  

• Location: The resort is about 7 min from George Airport and within similar distance from the N2 highway connecting Cape Town and Port Elizabeth. 

• Accommodation: From standard twin rooms and king rooms to presidential suite, the hotel accommodation caters for different types of travellers with one hundred bedrooms. The Suites have separate lounge and dining areas with wide open balconies and spectacular views. Standard rooms are spacious, decorated with contemporary style and have deluxe bath with walk-in showers. The balcony has expansive views, and most rooms have a balcony.     

• Dining options: There are three options for meals onsite. The hotel’s main restaurant is convenient to access and has both indoor and outdoor dining options with spectacular views of the Oubaai Golf Course. There is a Bistro & Bar that offers casual dining options close to the lifestyle centre with a vibrant atmosphere. If you prefer the ocean view, there is a club house that might be perfect to grab a drink or a snack in between activities. 

• What else is there: The resort itself has a Golf course (Ernie Els signature designed 18-hole Championship course) which is well maintained and curated. It has a separate spa  & wellness centre with reasonably priced packages for relaxation, a sizeable lifestyle centre with gym equipment, a Squash court and a Tennis Court. There are also a couple of hiking options from the resort, which can be useful to explore the area and go down to the coast on a sunny day. You can organize a picnic basket with the hotel. 

• What’s nearby: George has a lot to offer for active holidays – canoeing, hiking, tandem paragliding, EBike tours and many other options. There are also some boutique wineries and restaurants you can visit. Redberry Farm is another great place to visit for adults and kids where you can pick your own strawberries, ride the Redberry express, spend hours in the Hedge Maze while adults can try the Houtbosch wine pairing (wine and fudge).

The Space

The resort has close to 240 hectares of land with a golf course designed near the coast and views of the Indian Ocean. It has all the ingredients to relax and rejuvenate with luxurious comfort and yet good value for money. It has a wedding chapel with magnificent views of the ocean and the golf course. The resort is suitable for meetings, events or small retreats and comes with all the facilities for conferences.    

Where We Stayed

We stayed in a standard king room, which is a spacious 45 square-metre room with a balcony and spectacular views of the golf course and the mountains. It had plenty of natural light during the day and warm lighting for the night. A deluxe bath with walk in showers and a separate bathtub. Overall, it was designed for relaxation and appointed in a way to provide a spacious room.

Insider Tips   

• We suggest at least 2 or 3 nights to get the best value from this luxury resort and its facilities
• If you want to try different food options in George outside the resort, we highly recommend Bounty Eatery at the Redberry Farm for a gourmet farm style lunch and the Fat Fish for a seafood experience. Both have a South African twist and made from fresh produce in the region.
