Road Test

Choosing a serum today can be a minefield even for savvy beauty lovers in the know, but one brand is aiming to target specifics while also keeping things easy. HOLA Australia’s Holaceuticals Seaweed Serum Range, which recently launched, offers lineup of six serums which share a common key ingredient, seaweed, along with individual ones to provide specific skin benefits. The serums either MOISTURISE, FIRM, HYDRATE, BRIGHTEN or REPAIR the skin, and there’s one exclusive to the eyes, AWAKEN. The seaweed base in each serum is a key factor in the serums' success. Marine-sourced ingredients including seaweed, ale and kelp can be miracle workers for skin as they are rich in antioxidants, amino acids, and vitamin C, and among the many jobs they do include hydrating the skin, minimising fine lines, promoting collagen production, and boosting overall radiance. And there’s more. Besides being ultra-hydrating and anti-ageing, seaweed is safe ingredient for all skin types, and thanks to calming properties, it can be useful for anyone suffering with acne or rosacea. I was sent three of the serums to test, including REPAIR – Holaceuticals Seaweed Oligopeptide Repair Serum, MOISTURE – Holaceuticals Seaweed Ceramide Moisture Serum, and my personal favourite, HYDRATE – Holaceuticals Seaweed Hyaluronic Acid Hydrating Serum. The REPAIR serum has key ingredients including seaweed extract and oligopeptides, which boost skin firmness and tackle fine lines for a smoother and more youthful complexion. Meanwhile the MOISTURE serum is ideal for anyone with a drier or more mature skin. It combines seaweed extract with ceramides to strengthen skin’s barrier and retain moisture, as well as help the skin to protect itself against environmental aggressors such as irritants and pollution. And finally my favourite serum, HYDRATE, contains hyaluronic acid as well as seaweed extract. If you don’t know specifics about hyaluronic acid, it’s a substance naturally produced by the body, with the largest amounts of it found in your skin, connective tissue and eyes. Its main function is to retain water to keep your tissues well lubricated and moist, and in skin care specifically it increases hydration as well as reducing the appearance of wrinkles and fine lines. All three serums are lightweight and virtually odourless, as well as easy to use. Simply apply a few drops after cleansing (and toning if you do that step) and massage into the skin until fully absorbed. I tested the REPAIR serum in the morning and at night, including under sunscreen and light BB creme without any issues. The MOISTURE serum I reserved for nighttime only, and it definitely helped me to look well rested in the morning on waking. The HYDRATE serum I tested both morning and night, including an additional time under makeup and it worked brilliantly as a primer. Overall, all three serums are a delight to use, melting into the skin easily, and leaving it feeling soft, smooth and boosted.

Insider Tips

  • To make a quick and effective home made face mask on the road ideal for added hydration and to perk your skin up after a long flight, add a few drops of the Hyaluronic Acid or Ceramide Moisture Serum to a hydrating moisturiser or aloe vera gel, and leave on the skin for 15 minutes before washing off.
