Samahita Retreat: Koh Samui, Thailand

By:
Guest Writer: Gaye Gerard

Where Is It: On the south coast of Koh Samui, Thailand.

Why Go: More than just a yoga retreat, it’s a holiday destination which also offers spa treatments, detox and weight loss programs, meditation and core cycle fitness classes.

Best For: Groups of friends, or couples looking for a healthy holiday destination.

Three Things We Loved: The evening meditation classes, the therapeutic spa massage treatments, the early morning yoga classes.

The Ultimate Factor: It’s nestled on a stunning beach.

Overview:

Thailand has become a popular destination for health and wellness holidays and retreats, ranging from three-star eco-experiences to award winning luxury resorts. Samahita Retreat is one of the latter, as well as being the first retreat to offer a yoga core cycle and functional fitness program, which combines yoga, fitness, strength and cardio. If you’re looking for a relaxing holiday, which also offers a chance to expand your yoga practice, detox, and elevate your core fitness, Samahita ticks all the boxes. It’s a relaxed and modern resort devoted to yoga, mindfulness and wellbeing, which embraces you with serenity from the moment you walk through its lush tropical gardens dotted with vibrant flowers.

The Accommodation:

Samahita has 40 eco-friendly and modern rooms. While some of the split level loft rooms enjoy an ocean view, most accommodations come with a private balcony or courtyard. All rooms are equipped with air conditioning, a ceiling fan and mini fridge, a hairdryer, plenty of storage space, and an en-suite bathroom.

Where I stayed:

My accommodation was a short distance from the main retreat centre, where boutique rooms are nestled in amongst lush emerald gardens. Upon entry for the first time, I was delighted and impressed to see such a spacious and modern room which embraced Thai inspired décor, along with colourful local artwork, clean lines and an abundance of natural light thanks to expansive floor to ceiling windows overlooking the gardens.

What Else Is There:

There are a number of detox and yoga options across Samahita’s three, seven or 14-day retreats, which combine exercise, relaxation and indulgent spa treatments, so you can boost your energy or simply give your body a rest. One thing I loved about the yoga here was that the teachers will adapt each posture for beginners or advanced students so you can feel completely comfortable, yet still evolve your practice. Spa treatments abound, where I personally experienced an infrared sauna, massage aroma oils including lavender and lemongrass. Offering a range of traditional Thai and Ayurveda treatments, the therapists are all highly skilled, intuitive and use only the best organic natural ingredients.

A herbal steam room is located alongside the salt water pool, which is just steps from the beach, and where outdoor lounges offer a picturesque view of the beach next to the dining area. When it comes to food, Samahita’s philosophy is made of three essential pillars, “variety, fresh and made with love”. The food is designed to be mostly vegetarian, with locally sourced fresh whole food ingredients, delicious and is easy to digest as well as hit the sweet spot, with a combination of international and Thai flavours. On the buffet you will find everything from fruity pancakes, spicy curries and cleverly crafted vegetable dishes which are packed with goodness and flavour. They also have a juice bar where the staff can create any smoothie sure to delight your tastebuds and to re-energise the body. The dining and lounge area is a warm space with open style seating, Thai inspired décor with locally crafted furnishings and the large tables create an inviting sense of community, making even solo travellers feel at home.

The Verdict

Samahita Retreat is a place to connect and revitalise with an emphasis on finding mindfulness in your daily life, appreciating the power of nature to heal and nourish your body and mind. It’s a place where the staff become friends, sharing their stories, knowledge and inspirational practices for living a healthy fulfilling life. Your time spent here will leave you inspired to embrace your body and find the space to centre yourself.
