Road Test

Many years ago I lived in Mexico, and on one especially memorable trip exploring the exotic Yucatan Peninsula, which is located in the south, and on the Caribbean side of the country, I remember smelling mimosa for the first time. I was staying at a hotel in the countryside near famous Mayan ruins, and there was one in full bloom near my room. Not only was the fragrance of the flowers intoxicating, I also thought the mimosa was the prettiest tree I’d ever seen, with bright pink flowers like puffballs. Just as the the smell of bougainvillea always reminds me of Spain, where my brother has lived for many years, Mimosa always reminds me of my youth and my adventures in Mexico. And for that reason primarily, when I heard that there was a new luxury fragrance being launched celebrating mimosa, I had to at least smell it for old time’s sake. The fragrance in question is Amouage Love Mimosa, a new eau de parfum from Amouage’s Secret Garden Collection, and as scents go, it’s soft and velvety, with a strong heart of mimosa which instantly brought back memories of tropical America. The sentiment behind the fragrance is female empowerment. "Love Mimosa is for the fearless. It is a reflection of one's sensuality and individuality that captivates those within its reach," says Christopher Chong, Amouage Creative Director. "I was inspired by all the women who paved the way for future generations, and wanted to develop a scent that was as brave and bold as the women in our lives." Created by perfumer Elise Benat, Love Mimosa is undoubtedly a bold, oriental floral scent as well as being bright like bottled sunshine. It opens with aquatic tones and top notes of cascalone, while at its heart, complimenting the exotic mimosa, is sweet and fruity pear, along with creamy orris and heliotrope. And finally, at the base is ylang ylang, one of my favourite essential oils, which brings a subtle sensuality together with strength and individuality. Radiant, energetic and powerful, Love Mimosa is a versatile fragrance which instills confidence in the wearer and embraces the ideal that anything is impossible. For me, it was a delicious trip back to a bygone era, and the exotic, crazy country of Mexico which I used to call home.
