The Product: Cool-jams Sleep Wear & Travel Wear

Best For: Travellers to very hot or cold climates, anyone who suffers from night sweats.

Three Things We loved: The soft fabric, the designs, they work.

Road Test:

If you say the phrase “night sweats” your first thoughts are likely to be with menopausal women, with the distressing condition being a side effect of simply getting older. What you might not know, however, is that it’s not only menopause which causes night sweats; it can also be a symptom of perimenopause, which can kick in with some women as young as their late 30s, also sufferers of diabetes, obesity, anxiety and even andropause, which is male menopause. Another group who suffer from night sweats include cancer patients, in particular anyone diagnosed with breast cancer and has to take hormone therapy as part of their treatment (not to be confused with HRT, which they can’t touch). Enter Cool-ams, a range of specially designed sleep wear for night sweats, developed by an Australian oncology nurse, Mary Ryan. Ryan’s range, which covers men and women, is made from moisture wicking material, which draws sweat and heat from the body to keep body temperature regulated. Basically, the fibres in the sleepwear pull heat and moisture to the outside surface of the fabric where it quickly evaporates. It is also antibacterial, meaning it eliminates odour and keeps you smelling fresh, dries very quickly, is anti-pilling, durable, wrinkle-resistant and also light weight. And if all that wasn’t enough, it is softer than cotton and dries four times faster.

When I first heard about wicking sleep wear I was naturally skeptical. But night sweats aside, what also piqued my curiosity is how travellers could benefit from Cool-jams. Living in a more humid climate these days, the Gold Coast, I’ve noticed how I’ve felt hotter and more sweaty at night, but in the spirit of being environmentally friendly, we’re not people who will just bang on the air conditioning at will. The same can apply to travellers; they might be travelling through a very hot and humid climate, and not be fans of air conditioning, or they are experiencing adventure travel without aircon, or in a cold climate which is over heated. Night sweats will impact on your sleep, but add damp clothing to the mix and you’re likely to have a fitful rest, whether you’re a menopausal woman at home or a perimenopausal woman on a ski trip. The question is do Cool-jams work? My new Gold Coast home was the perfect place to try them out. I am not a pyjamas fan so I opted for a black gathered tank nightgown, which had a lovely design and extended to just on my knees. From the very first night, it was not only comfortable to wear but it did what it promised; when I got hot and sweaty, the nightgown appeared to absorb it all, without staying even slightly damp. It was also super easy to wash and dry, and came out of the washing machine looking like new. All I need now is to find a pillow which can cool your head!

The Verdict:

Whether you are a person who suffers from night sweats, or you’re travelling to a hot or humid climate and without air conditioning (or you don’t like it) the great news about Cool-jams is that they not only look great but they work. They won’t stop you from getting hot, but if you do you will be much more comfortable, and feel a lot less sweaty.

Cool-jams are available in separates and sets in a great variety of colours, with sizes ranging from S-XXL, and prices starting from $36.00. Visit www.cool-jams.com.au.
