The Melbourne based Sonia Orts is renowned for her botanical beauty products which are based ancient Spanish philosophy and alchemy, and her new collection of Alchemic Perfumes not only embrace this, but also take you beyond simply being enveloped in a captivating fragrance. There are three variations in this new range, simply called No 1, No 2 and No 3, each one an exquisite, natural perfume which has been formulated not just by blending ingredients, but with the aim to tap into your mood. Sonia’s Alchemic Perfumes are 100 per cent natural, and made using raw botanical ingredients which are organic and wild-harvested where possible, with therapeutic grade essential oils distilled and mixed with a food grade alcohol sourced from sugar cane. This means that the perfumes are toxin free, and they don’t contain heavy metals, synthetics fragrances, petrochemicals, or synthetic preservatives. I was sent a sample of Sonia Orts No 2 to test which is said to be inspired by the scents of Sonia’s Mediterranean summers. The fragrance is undoubtedly citrusy, opening with top notes of Spanish citrus fruit aromas including lemons, while at its heart is an Italian Bergamot that lingers. Also present is the rare, delicate and delicious Egyptian neroli, continuing on to a woody base of Mediterranean cypress rind. I’ve always believed that real perfume making is a combination of art and skill, and when you add a little alchemy, as Sonia does with this new range, the result is a magical process of creation.
