In recent years ebook readers have become a popular travel companion. Besides being able to fit an entire library into a small device smaller than a book, they also cut down on weight in your luggage, but if you enjoy reading a good book by the pool somewhere hot, there’s always a risk you could drop it into the water - end of story.

  • What Is It: The latest ebook reader from Kobo.
  • Why Buy It: It’s waterproof.
  • The Details: The Kobo Aura H2O is available from Kobo and other retailers including JB Hi-Fi, rrp $239.95, www.kobo.com.

Road Test

The new Kobo Aura H2O eliminates the risks as it’s completely waterproof; drop it in the drink by accident, and it will keep on working. It’s waterproofed for up to 60 minutes in two metres of water thanks to HZO Protection; the coating technology applied to the device’s interior allows it to be fully submerged without the need for port covers. But this sleek ebook reader has other perks. It has a large, super sharp screen, you fire it up using a single blue button on the bag (the rest is all touch-screen), and it supports a variety of file types, fonts, and layout options allowing you to customise your reading experience. And there’s more. The Aura H2O can be enjoyed in direct sunlight due to an anti-glare E Ink display, while ComfortLight PRO reduces blue-light spectrum, so the device won’t keep you awake at night after you’ve finished reading. There’s a generous 8GB of storage for your ebooks - it can store up to 6,000 -  and it offers weeks of battery life. And with 512 MB of RAM and the Freescale SoloLite processor, page turns are quick and seamless. Setting the Kobo Aura H2O up for the first time is easy. Once charged just switch it on and follow the prompts; you will need to set up an account with Kobo if you don’t already have one (I did so I just signed in) and if you have books on file and connected to Wi-Fi they will show up on screen. From there you can download your books, and read them at your leisure, using the touch screen to navigate. The H2O is a sleek ebook reader and a joy to use . You can’t fit it into your back pocket, but it wins in durability stakes, and that’s a good thing in our book.
