If you’re travelling, planning a get together on holiday, or having a royal wedding party this weekend, there’s a way to have your wine and drink it too - without any of the nasty consequences. Here’s how.

  • What Is It: A guilt-free, alcohol removed wine.
  • Why buy: It has all the health benefits of fermentation, but cuts out the alcohol content.
  • The Details: Edenvale Wine costs rrp $9.49 a bottle, and it comes in three varieties - Chardonnay, Shiraz and Sparkling Cuvee. Available from Coles, Woolworths, IGA, Dan Murphy and FoodWorks, www.edenvale.com.au.

Road Test

There are many reasons why people don’t drink, with avoiding a hangover being just one. Perhaps you are pregnant or breastfeeding, you are taking certain medications which don’t mix with alcohol, or maybe you are trying to get in shape to fit into your swimmers for your next holiday. Whatever the reason, it’s also common for many people to enjoy an extra glass of wine or two on holiday, but overdoing it can make you feel pretty rotten, as well as add unwanted calories to your daily intake. Edenvale is a range of three alcohol removed wines, which offer a way to have your wine and eat it. Unlike most other non-alcoholic beverage alternatives, Edenvale wines are proper wines, made from varietal wine grapes using traditional wine-making methods, with the majority of alcohol removed at the final stage of the wine making process (leaving just 0.5%). That means that the wines keep all the flavour, characteristics and varietal integrity of traditional blends, and the health benefits of fermentation, without the usual calorie load, and the potential for a hangover. The lineup of wines includes Chardonnay, a Sparkling Cuvee, and a Shiraz. I got to try the Chardonnay, which was smooth and quite well-balanced if a little sour, and the Sparkling Cuvee, which was quite like the real thing, complete with a fresh and fruity flavour, and plenty of bubbles. Wine aficionados may scoff, and not everyone will like the taste, but Edenvale has come up with a pretty good solution which can work for many people on many levels. Drinking without the consequences? Sounds good to us.
