East Hotel Hong Kong is one of the best luxury hotels on Hong Kong Island where leisure travellers can stray off the well-worn tourist path and still enjoy easy access to the heart of the city.

  • Location: On the north eastern coast of Hong Kong Island, 45 minutes from the airport, and adjoining the shopping and entertainment complexes, Cityplaza.
  • Accommodations: There are 339 rooms, with many offering spectacular harbour or city views, and six elegantly furnished suites. The hotel prides itself on providing accommodations that are both spacious and airy in stark contrast to the dense feeling one can get on Hong Kong streets. With five room categories, high ceilings are standard with the average room size measuring 28 square metres. Modern, bright and equipped with the latest technology including a bedside control system, electronic block-out blinds, Apple TV and super fast wifi, all rooms feature minimalist deco, natural wooden floors and clean, simple lines.
  • Dining options: The café, Feast, serves a delicious, healthy buffet and a la carte breakfast, as well as lunch, afternoon tea and daily themed buffet or a la carte dinners. Much of its broad menu can also be served in room or around the swimming pool. While Asian specialties are plentiful, the focus is also on healthy Western cuisine using locally sourced produce. East also has its own all-natural roof top herb garden with plenty of exotic ingredients to flavour the excellent food on offer.
  • What else is there: East has an excellent gym that’s open 24 hours. There are also complimentary road bikes and unlike most Hong Kong accommodations, there is an outdoor heated pool ideal for doing laps, or getting respite from the heat. For a quiet drink or some delicious tapas, the flagship rooftop bar and lounge, Sugar, is not to be missed. Hotel guests and locals all chill out here over breathtaking sunsets, panoramic harbour views and delicious cocktails.
  • What’s nearby: Taikoo subway station is literally next-door, and it’s a short ride to busy Central but there is much in the local area that warrants discovery. We found several authentic Chinese, Japanese and Korean eateries tucked away in surrounding residential buildings.
  • Why go: East experience offers the best of both worlds. You can experience the best retail shopping at the mall next door, take a quick ride to the hustle and bustle or simply relax by the swimming pool enjoying first class hospitality. Perfect for a romantic interlude or a leisurely visit.

The Space

East is a chic, innovative, city hotel just a breath away from the chaos. This slick, modern high-rise has a sense of eastern sophistication at its core. Light filled with much of its design focused on creating a soothing atmosphere, the hotel makes much use of natural materials like marble, wood and bamboo. It’s unique ‘bird’s nest’ staircase constructed from a labyrinth of wood and steel symbolises the harmony and balance between Yin and Yang. The hotel boasts several interesting, modern pop-art pieces too representing horses, butterflies and leaping fish that connect the hotel’s interior with the outside world and nature.

Where We Stayed

The view through from our Harbour View room was mesmerising. We could have easily watched the boats on Victoria Harbour all day and especially at night when Kowloon really lights up. Tastefully decorated in light, earthy tones and with natural materials to provide a sense of cosiness, the room was spacious and functional with an espresso coffee machine, a selection of teas and infusions and an array of hi-tech gadgetry. The well laid out open-floor plan meant we were able to use the bathroom’ and its luxurious open rain shower while either gazing outside or watching TV. Our comfortable queen size bed also ensured a restful night’s sleep.
