Breidenbacher Hof A Capella, Düsseldorf, Germany

This gorgeous luxury hotel, which dates back for more than 200 years, offers a romantic getaway for couples looking to relax in an elegant yet surprisingly modern environment.

  • Location: On Königsallee, the iconic street known for designer fashion in the heart of Düsseldorf.
  • Accommodations: There are 106 spacious accommodations including Superior and Deluxe Rooms, and Grande Deluxe Rooms which are akin to suites and come with a kitchenette and Old Town views. The decor is turn-of-the-century architecture fused with a modern design, where opulent interiors sit alongside contemporary comforts.
  • Dining options: Brasserie 1806 offers a combination of French cuisine with German favourites and seasonal menus, along with panoramic views over Düsseldorf's Old Town. The restaurant staff are professional yet friendly, which can sometimes be a bit a hit or miss at other luxury hotels. Afternoon tea, weekend brunch and a healthy superfood menu are available in the Lobby Lounge, and the Capella Bar is the place to enjoy a creative cocktail.
  • What else is there: The hotel has a fully equipped fitness centre, and a lavish spa featuring an indoor pool, two Finnish saunas and a steam bath, and fitness coaches. The lineup of activities also includes cooking masterclasses, cocktail making, painting, rum-tasting and private yoga sessions organised on request.
  • What’s nearby: Düsseldorf it at your doorstep, with the luxury brands of the primary shopping district just outside the hotel, and the Town Hall, theatre, museums and the Rhine River Promenade within walking distance.
  • Why go: It provides an elegant and luxurious stay for couples, where all guests are treated as VIPs. The Rolling Stones have stayed here, and it is a hub for Hollywood actors and tycoon yet all guests are treated with equal adoration.

The Space

The iconic Breidenbacher Hof was rebuilt and completely renovated in 2008, emerging with a lineup of impressive new features including a huge wellness spa, and a private sitting area for guests known as the 'Living Room' where free coffee, tea, snacks and drinks are available in a glamorous environment. But there is a lot more to love about the hotel besides a lavish decor, including its location in the heart of the city on the corner of the iconic Königsallee (the equivalent of Paris’s Champs-Élysées). Another plus - the Breidenbacher Hof’s staff is friendly and efficient without being overbearing, from the waiters and room attendants to your personal assistant.

Where We Stayed

We were fortunate to enjoy one of the largest of the hotel’s Deluxe Rooms which are extremely spacious at 55 square metres. It had a modern meets traditional decor, with a focus on earth tones and plenty of gold hues, along with the European charm which runs throughout the hotel. The room came a lineup of perks including a king size bed (twins are also available), an LCD television and free wi-fi, and a nicely appointed Italian marble bathroom with a rainfall shower and large bath tub, and amenities including luxury toiletries, bathrobes and slippers. There was a touch panel to control lightening, air conditioning and curtains, and in our case lovely views of the old-town (others overlook the courtyard).

UltimateTravelMagazine.com Loves

  • The friendly staff and attentive service.
  • Free amenities including the in-room mini-bar and the Living Room snacks and drinks.
  • Flexible check in and check out times.
  • Philipp Ferber, the Head Chef of Brasserie 1806, offers a fine dining experience worth saving a night for.

Insider Tips

  • The breakfast buffet is at its best on Sunday when a buffet brunch follows – the elaborate spread is fit for a king.
  • The personal assistant option is a unique amenity offered by the hotel. Imagine having your own private butler for each guest and having someone take care of all your needs…..and with a smile. From organising taxis, touring Düsseldorf and even getting you into the best doctor or health clinic to get your heart checked, nothing is too much trouble.
