Road Test

If you've ever had leg cramps, or charley horses as they are often called, you’ll know how painful they can be. They’re a common problem affecting the feet, calves, and thigh muscles, and can often occur while a person is sleeping or resting. Although leg cramps can come and go in a flash, if you’re unlucky they can last for around nine minutes or longer, leaving behind tenderness for up to 24 hours. I’ve suffered on an off from leg cramps while sleeping over the years, mostly in my feet and calves, and which gets worse when I travel, and as I’ve got older. Upon waking, stretching my legs and either pointing my toes or flexing my feet is an instant trigger; if I catch it in time, a cramp is averted, but if I don’t the familiar pain ensues. While annoying and painful, most leg cramps are considered harmless, including mine, but there is a way to combat the problem, along with a lineup of other health issues, thanks to magnesium. Magnesium plays a key role in over 300 enzymatic reactions within the human body, including the metabolism of food, the synthesis of fatty acids and proteins, and the transmission of nerve impulses. It’s also essential bone health, calcium absorption and heart health, and can help to ease a variety ailments including leg cramps, PMT, migraines, anxiety and poor sleep. Although you can obtain magnesium through your diet, eating a variety of foods including almonds, spinach, oatmeal, broccoli, brown rice and bananas, many of us have an inadequate daily intake.

There is an easy solution, however, thanks to Amazing Oils, a family run Sunshine Coast company specialising in magnesium chloride health products. Sourced from Australia’s pristine local salt lakes, Amazing Oils uses organically registered magnesium chloride in its products, three of which include a Natural Relief Oil Spray, a Gel Roll-On, and Bath Flakes. The Natural Relief Oil Spray was the first product I road tested with instant results. For two weeks I sprayed a small amount into the palms of my hands just before bed, rubbing it into my calf muscles. The oil is light and odourless, and it melts into the skin easily; from the first night I used it, I noticed that the next morning that my cramp trigger was gone. No cramps, no pain, and still cramp free down the track. The second product I tested in between was the Gel Roll-On, which is made from the same organically sourced Magnesium Oil, mixed with a tiny amount of organic Xanthan Gum to create a gel-like texture. This is particularly  ideal for travellers as it is easy to apply, and easy to transport in a handbag or carry on bag, and it has the same benefits as the spray oil. Finally, if you enjoy soaking in the bath, you can turn to the Amazing Oils Magnesium Bath Flakes to relax and unwind after a long day working, exercising or on the road. Just half cup will ease aches, pains and more, while topping up your magnesium levels.
