McAlpine House, Broome

By:
Ben Hall

This century-old historical home in the heart of Broome has been transformed into a luxury boutique hotel and its old world charm combined with modern contemporary styling makes it a great weekend getaway or romantic getaway. McAlpine House was originally built as the home for Master Pearler Captain Herbert Kennedy in 1910 and now it’s become one of the premier properties in the holiday destination of Broome in far northern Western Australia. Surrounded by lush tropical gardens, extra lattice verandahs have been added to enhance the historical feel of the property while also providing guests with some privacy and this makes it a serene and elegant luxury hotel with a difference. There’s also original local artwork scattered throughout and this adds to the feeling that McAlpine House is a truly unique luxury boutique hotel.

The Rooms

There are just eight rooms which are all individually styled with their own private outdoor spaces where you can catch a late afternoon breeze. The premier room is the McAlpine Suite which is on the ground floor by the swimming pool and the first thing you notice when you enter is the extravagant four poster bed which dominates the large space. Off to the side is a generous double ensuite with a deep bath and double vanity. The polished wooden floors and antique furnishings combined with some modern contemporary touches makes it an elegant place to relax after a long day of exploring in Broome. There’s also Garden Suites, which are relatively new, Pearlers Verandah Rooms which are heritage style and capture the history and character of a bygone era, and the Library Retreat Rooms are on the first floor latticed library verandah. All rooms have king or queen beds, modern bathrooms and air conditioning.

Dining

The Pavilion Dining Room is the main restaurant and it’s the heart and soul of McAlpine House. It has a 12 seat communal table for those who like to dine with others but there’s also individual tables near the pool and at the front of the property set among the tropical gardens. A high quality continental breakfast is served here between 7.30am and 9am and you can also buy coffee and tea outside of breakfast time and wine and beer. High tea is now being served as well with a selection of sandwiches, scones, good pastries and a range of unique tea blends. It costs $49 per person and includes a glass of bubbly.

Other Facilities

A swimming pool has been built in the middle of McAlpine House and it’s a great way to cool off after a hot day of exploring the Broome area. There’s also the Pavilion Dining Room which also doubles as a reading room during the and there’s also a library.

The Verdict

This place oozes charm and has all the creature comforts you’d expect from a luxury boutique hotel and it’s the ideal place for a romantic getaway in Broome.
