Romantic Getaways NSW - Jonah's Whale Beach
For many Sydneysiders, Jonah's has become an iconic institution over the years; it's a hideaway not far from the city, and ideal anyone seeking a few days of solace, or a romantic getaway. This gorgeous boutique hotel is tucked away far up on the Northern Beaches, enjoying a prime spot overlooking picturesque Whale Beach. Forget cozy B&B accommodation, however; Jonah's is the only hotel part of the prestigious Relais & Chateau group in Sydney, with 11 luxury ocean view suites, and fine dining to boot. And if you really feel like spoiling yourself, and indulging in ultimate romance, you can always arrive by seaplane - it's just a 20 minute flight from Rose Bay. The hotel has an 85-year history, and has been frequented by celebrities including actors and rock stars over the years, from Vivien Leigh and Joan Collins, to Bono, Dame Shirley Bassey, and Gerard Butler.
The Rooms:
All of Jonah's 11 Ocean Retreat rooms are stylishly appointed with sweeping views of the ocean, a private balcony, and a spa. If you need more space or privacy, however, Jonah's Private is a secluded residence situated next to the main lodge, with its own entrance, large balcony and a swimming pool. Our room was just a level up from reception, tucked away with a view of the southern end of Whale Beach and the property's expansive entertaining terrace.
The decor was very much stylish contemporary meets the beach, the colours a pallet of muted tones, with rich dark polished wood floors, and plush fabrics. The retreat comprised a sitting area, sleeping area, a balcony with chairs and a table, and a large bathroom with a spa bath, with balcony doors, floor to ceiling windows and picture windows by the bed flooding the area with sunlight. The walls are off white, and the furniture is handcrafted and a mixture of warm wood and white wicker, with a hessian couch. There are two flat screen TVs, a small one tucked away in a cupboard in the sitting area, and a much larger one in the bedroom also tucked away in a closet, both hooked up to Foxtel with the full package - should you find yourself hanging in your room! There are splashes of colour in the striped cushions and beachy artwork. The balcony is long and deep with deep chairs to relax in and enjoy the view. Facilities include a mini bar, a coffee plunger with ground coffee, and an electric kettle, and if you fancy sharing your experience on Instagram, there is free Wi-Fi.
The bed was extremely comfortable and king sized, ideal for enjoying breakfast in bed, which you can organise as you wish. There is a long picture window with electric operated blinds. Between the bedroom and the bathroom are doors which, when opened, reveal a generous sized triangular spa bath, so you can enjoy the view beyond your room while enjoying a soak. The bathroom decor was simple; small cream tiles on the walls, larger butter coloured tiles on the floor, and a warm wood vanity basin with emerald green tiling and two sinks. The toiletries hail from the luxury cult brand L'Occitane, with shampoo, conditioner and more. The shower is large and walk-in.
Other Facilities:
The hotel has comfortable bar, and a famous restaurant known for fine dining as well as more sweeping ocean views, and it has an extensive wine list drawn from a cellar containing an impressive 5,000 bottles of vintage and Australian wines. Just ask for something and they are likely to have it. You can read our full review of the dining experience here. The terrace is the place to enjoy a drink or a light lunch - it's off the restaurant - and there's a gorgeous cliff top garden. There isn't a spa as such, but you can organise a beauty or massage service in your room if you're a guest - just ask at reception.
The Verdict:
Jonah's is a wonderful spot for a romantic getaway for anyone, and especially for people who are time poor and don't have much time to travel afar. It has it all; gorgeous suites, fabulous views, friendly service, and plenty of good food in-house, with the stunning Whale Beach on the doorstep.
