Cheval Three Quays, London

Choosing where to stay in London these days for a romantic getaway can present travellers with somewhat of a dilemma. Besides occupancy rates being generally high in the UK capital, there is a plethora of choice when it comes to accommodation types, and locations within the city. From the West End and Soho, to Knightsbridge and Chelsea, each area has its own charms, sights and attractions. One part of town which is basking in newfound popularity is the city's east, particularly around the banks of the River Thames, and if you're looking for a place to stay which boasts an ideal location, views, and everything a couple could wish for in a romantic escape, look no further than Cheval Three Quays.

I am a big fan of serviced apartments, in particular for longer stays in major cities. For one, they offer incredible flexibility with the benefits of a true home-away-from-home, coupled with the perks of a five-star hotel such as gym, restaurant and more. Apartments also often have added benefits such as kitchens where you can brew your own coffee, complimentary internet access, laundry facilities if you need them, and the option to entertain friends with space. Cheval Three Quays offers all this and more, the "more" being a sublime location in Tower Hill. Along with offering panoramic views of the river, the iconic Tower Bridge, the ancient Tower of London, and across the Thames and The Shard, there are plenty of restaurants and bars on your doorstep. And with Tower Hill Tube station just a few minutes walk away, it's also convenient for sightseeing further afield.

Beyond romantic getaways, however, Cheval Three Quays is also ideal for couples travelling together or families, with its 159 apartment configurations ranging in size from neat studios to three-bedrooms. The apartment hotel is relatively new - it only opened in March 2014 - and it's the Cheval group's seventh London property, overall feeling more like exclusive luxury homes. The others are in suitably popular upmarket neighbourhoods including Knightsbridge, Chelsea and Hyde Park to name a few. From the moment you arrive at Three Quays, however, especially if your arrival is long haul from Hong Kong as mine was, you immediately are greeted with smiling faces at reception, friendly advice on what to see and do, and offered help for anything you may need during your stay. The next joy is seeing your apartment.

The Apartments

My two-bedroom apartment was on the fourth floor on the corner of the property with a Tower view. The entrance hall was impressive enough; spacious, welcoming and with a pleasing decor of neutral colours, a work station, and a huge closet. From here you also access the guest, or second, bathroom, which was also spacious with a full sized deep tub, and a continuation of neutral hues including large beige tiles and crisp white towels. However, on walking into the open-plan living area the first thing I saw was an alluring view of iconic Tower bridge through floor to ceiling windows at the far end of the room. This space was somewhat a softened triangle shape, the sitting area extending down one side to a dining area with that view, and the open plan kitchen extending in the other direction with a strategically placed easy chair and footrest to enjoy the same view from floor-to-ceiling windows at the other end. In between is a long, curved wall, on the other side of which is a balcony with panoramic views of the Thames, Tower Bridge, The Shard, and the Tower of London. The decor throughout is luxurious, all whitewashed walls, deep cream leather couches, warm polished wood floors, and accents of colour in the artworks, and bronze coloured cushions. The open plan kitchen is so inviting it would encourage budding chefs to cook. There's a split oven, an espresso machine, a dishwasher, a double fridge for chilling your bottle of bubbly, and every accessory you could possibly need to prepare a simple breakfast or a romantic gourmet dinner. The curtains are sheer with creamy drapes, and there's a flat-screen TV mounted on the wall with a music area, and a glass dining table for four people to savour the romantic river and tower view.

The bedrooms have a similar decor to the rest of the apartment, with plenty of cream and biscuit hues and berber style carpeting. Bedroom two is slightly smaller then bedroom one, with a large double bed with a satin coverlet and crisp white bedlinen, plenty of closet space, and a wall-mounted TV. Bedroom one, the master bedroom, enjoys a similar design but is larger, with a romantic relaxation area at one end benefitting from an easy chair and footstool from which to enjoy the view, and a large flat screen TV on the wall. Both bedrooms are joined together by a long balcony. The bathroom is located off the bedroom, and although it doesn't have a full tub it has a huge walk-in shower with a rainforest shower head, a hair dryer and plenty of Hermes toiletries and white plush towels. Other amenities in the apartment include free Wi-Fi, cable TV, a built-in laundry facility with iron and ironing board, plush bathrobes, air-conditioning, and some supplies in the kitchen including coffee pods, fruit and snacks. It is so inviting and comfortable, and with that view, it is hard to imagine ever going out.

Other Facilities

Although it's an apartment hotel, Cheval Three Quays has all the facilities a five-star hotel offers ideal for a romantic getaway. They include a fully manned 24-reception, maid service five days a week, and a fitness suite which is well equipped. As for the local area, there is a wide range of cafés, bars and restaurants in the immediate vicinity to explore and enjoy. The minimum stay is just one night, and the views from the apartments can be broken down into Tower, River or Urban.

The Verdict

If you are looking for flexibility, privacy and all the perks of a home away from home during a longer, romantic stay in London, Cheval Three Quays is an ideal choice for any couple. Besides a range of luxury apartments to choose from, each possessing plenty of style and some alluring views, the property is ideally located for exploring a newly up-and-coming neighbourhood in the UK capital, with other major areas including the West End, Knightsbridge and the city on your doorstep. For luxury and convenience with more than a hint of exclusivity and style it will be hard to beat.
