The Fairmont, Monte Carloby Ben Hall
Right in the heart of the Principality of Monaco, and with sweeping ocean views of the Mediterranean, the Fairmont Monte Carlo is quite simply one of the great hotels of Europe. Formerly the Monte Carlo Grand Hotel, the Fairmont Hotel Group bought the property in 2005 and immediately added its own luxurious touches in keeping with its international branding. Far from turning it into “just another Fairmont”, its unique design elements have been improved and the hotel now has a large and loyal following.
The Fairmont occupies possibly the most expensive piece of real estate on the entire Côte d'Azur - it sits right below the Monte Carlo Casino on a terrace that wraps around from the Harbour and its fabulous yachts to views along the famous coastline. Many of the foundations were sunk directly into the seabed, a feature which gives the hotel its uninterrupted water views, and all that the magical city has to offer is within easy walking distance.
The 619 guestrooms have been recently refurbished to give the hotel a “fresh” feel but the interior designs chosen still reflect the charm of Monaco’s past. Most of the suites and guestrooms have ocean views, but some overlook the city and its famous streets which become part of the circuit for the annual formula one race. All of the rooms have big floor-to-ceiling windows which allow a lot of light in, and provide a sense of space and vibrancy and modern Mediterranean art features decorate the interiors. All bathrooms are large and made of marble with separate bathtubs and bidets and have designer toiletries. Amenities include air conditioning, cable television, refrigerator, safes, internet access, large beds, hair dryers, bath robes, mini-bar and 24-hour room service.
Dining:
With three top quality restaurants, all with ocean views, many guests simply don’t leave the hotel during their stay. L'Argentin is the only South American themed restaurant in Monaco and it features specialty meats including beef, lamb and chicken and live Andean music. Le Pistou is the Mediterranean restaurant specialising in seafood and pasta dishes and the bar Saphir offers snack food throughout the day and has live music in the evenings. In-Room dining is available 24 hours a day.
Of the hotel’s facilities, the rooftop pool is the star attraction - it’s surrounded by very comfy sunbeds and is heated in the cooler months and has stunning views across the harbour and up the coast. Nearby there’s also a gymnasium, sauna, Turkish baths and a spa where aerobics and yoga classes are offered. There’s also a fully equipped business centre and wireless internet is available throughout the hotel. The public areas themselves offer up some great spots to sit and relax - but be warned - it’s very difficult not to order a cup of tea or something stronger from the attentive hotel staff who keep a close check on everyone’s comfort.
The Verdict:
From the moment you arrive at the grand entrance and have the doors opened by bellhops in top hat and tails, to the calm and relaxed check-in while a pianist plays in the lobby, to your arrival into the contemporary-styled rooms with balconies right on the harbour of Monte Carlo - the hotel delivers a special experience in keeping with its amazing setting. It’s a blend of modern amenities with old world charm - and views to die for.
