Book Review - The Carrie Diaries

by Joanna Hall

With the next instalment of the Sex and the City about to hit big screens across the globe, Candace Bushnell has put pen to paper again to enthral us with an insight into Carrie Bradshaw's life before she hit the Big Apple. Bushnell, creator of the original Sex And The City book and those infamous four girls we all love, takes fans back to a time in Carrie's life before the Jimmy Choos, the Cosmopolitans, and Mr. Big, a simpler time when everyone's favourite single girl had not yet made it.

The story reveals Carrie's journey from suburban Connecticut to her beloved New York City, through her early friendships and romances, and some of the experiences which shaped the writer and fashion icon so many people came to love. The book opens in Carrie's senior year of high school, a world of inseparable friends, and a bad boy called Sebastian Kydd. But it's a friend's ultimate betrayal which forces the young Carrie to question everything in her life, and make changes.

This book is a must-read for fans of Sex And The City, even though there are some significant differences between the Carrie of the print world and the glamorous icon we've seen in the series. For some it will offer an insight into the Carrie who became the toast of New York. For others it will be a throwback to their own high school days, as many of the characters are people we've all encountered during through turbulent late teen years. I guarantee one thing, once you start to read it, you won't want to stop.
